Hear Richard’s SS3 graduation story, speaking with Ruth: from illiterate to top student

Richard is from Shaffa in Borno State. His father was murdered by Boko Haram 2014. Two weeks before his father said to Richard, “Strive to take first place in your class.” Richard then missed one year of school. Boko Haram were trying to kill him, or kidnap him and force into a life of insurgency. Eventually, he was brought to CFM and he could hardly speak English, read or write. He became the head prefect in our school and achieved an exceptional score in his JAMB (Joint Admissions Matriculation Board) exams. He started a mathematics club in our school – he loves maths. His dream is to be a marine engineer, even though he has never seen a ship or the sea. His sister, aged 15, is also with CFM, in SS2.
